Spock wasn't the social type. He didn't do as well as a Human when it came to gatherings like these, but as the First Officer of the Federation's flagship and no where to hide from the Captain for it, Spock had to go.
There were various ambassadors on board, stationed in large guest quarters on the ship, which was heading towards the planetoid Babel in the Alpha Quadrant. There was to be a conference there between various species on the division of dilithium between them, trying to make it fair and what not.
The Vulcan was in his quarters, pulling on the shirt for his dress uniform with a sigh. He didn't want to go, these things were better for Kirk and John, not him.

A battle was engaged, with the Orions demanding for the ambassadors and various other representatives not be taken to Babel. They didn't give reasons why, and Kirk ordered for shields to go up. Not three seconds after that order was given and carried out, the battle engaged.

"What in the hell is going on."

"We are being attacked, Leonard." Spock answers, since Kirk is busy arguing with Scotty about how much their shields can handle damn it. "They do not wish to negotiate over taking the ambassadors on the ship to the planet Babel."

Jim was still giving orders while Spock and Scott were trying to pinpoint a section of the opposing ship that was weak - anything to deal damage to it to stop it from firing. All the firing, if the Commander were Human, would be making him nervous with how close the reports were saying it was getting to the level that Medical was situated on.
